Hackebein’s Object Tracking

English | 日本語 | 한국어 | 简体中文 | 繁體中文

Track real SteamVR/OpenVR devices into VRChat on your avatar. Demo 1 (X), Demo 2 (X), Demo 2 (Bluesky)

You set up Trackers in Unity, upload the avatar, and run the app while SteamVR is active.

Requirements

SteamVR and supported trackers / controllers
A VRChat Avatars Unity project managed with the VRChat Creator Companion
This package from Hackebein’s VPM listing
ObjectTracking App — Steam Store

Install

Add the package

In VCC, add the listing: dev.hackebein.vpmm.dev/index.json
Open your avatar project and add Hackebein’s Object Tracking
Open the project in Unity

App

Get the app from the Steam Store
Run the app while SteamVR is running (first run registers it under SteamVR Autostart Applications)
Keep the app running whenever you use Object Tracking in VRChat

Launch arguments for a VRChat on another PC:

--osc=inPort:outIP:outPort

VRChat and Unity Play Mode on this PC are found automatically. In VRChat, turn OSC on in the Action Menu and accept the send-permission prompt for Hackebein Object Tracking. Pass --osc=inPort:outIP:outPort once per remote machine when starting the app (process override; does not rewrite the config file), or set "Osc" in %APPDATA%/ObjectTracking/config.json to that string or a JSON array of them. An endpoint already saved there is still used. A new config does not assume a port. App logs: %APPDATA%/ObjectTracking/object_tracking.log.

First success

Start SteamVR
In Unity, under the avatar root, create a child GameObject and add Hackebein’s Object Tracking Tracker, or choose Tools / Hackebein / Add Tracker to Current Avatar
Parent your prop mesh under that GameObject (or use the Tracker transform as the prop root), add a Device Model for visual feedback
Select a SteamVR device for a preview and default assignment (start SteamVR and choose Local or Remote under Editor Preview to pick from live devices).
Set your Real Height in VRChat before upload (see Scale and height)
Build and upload the avatar
Run ObjectTracking App, wear the avatar in VRChat with OSC on and the tracked object should follow the device

Tracker component

Add Hackebein’s Object Tracking Tracker component to one child GameObject per tracked object under the avatar root.

Transform

Position / Rotation - While Editor Preview is Local or Remote, these follow the selected SteamVR device.
Scale - Real-to-VR multiplier for this tracker. (Read-only)

If a prop looks like it orbits when the physical tracker spins in place, the mesh center is offset from the device origin. Adjust the Tracker’s Position or Rotation to match.

Tracker fields

When enabled, this tracker gets controls on the generated Object Tracking expression menu. When disabled, the Tracker inspector lists each OSC address with a Copy button, and Generate menu writes this tracker’s Enable and Tracker Config as assets you can drop into your own expression menu and edit. Wire these parameters into your own menu (<id> is this tracker’s Identifier):

Parameter	Type	Role
`ObjectTracking/connected`	Bool	Host keep-alive pulse (the app writes this)
`ObjectTracking/isConnected`	Bool	Connected status shown in the menu
`ObjectTracking/enable/<id>`	Bool	Enable / disable the slot
`ObjectTracking/assign/<id>/next`	Bool	Assign next SteamVR device
`ObjectTracking/assign/<id>/previous`	Bool	Assign previous SteamVR device
`ObjectTracking/offset/<id>/<PX\|PY\|PZ\|RX\|RY\|RZ>`	Float	Nudge axis (normalized float delta; position m/300, rotation °/4500)
`ObjectTracking/offsetGuide`	Int	Which Tracker Config menu is open (0 closed; each slot uses a different value)
`ObjectTracking/offsetGuide/<PX\|PY\|PZ\|RX\|RY\|RZ>`	Bool	Offset guide for that axis
`ObjectTracking/offset/<id>/reset`	Bool	Reset offsets for the slot

Offset Step Units
Offset step units baked into the avatar when you build/upload the avatar. Follow Editor (default) bakes metric (cm) or imperial (in) position nudge steps from this computer’s region. Pin Metric or Imperial to keep those units regardless of who builds it. Rotation steps always use degrees.

Offset Guide Visuals
One local guide for the whole avatar. Opening a Tracker Config submenu shows it on that tracker.

Tracker Model
Mesh shown under the Tracker in the editor. With a Default Hardware device selected, Add Model uses that device. With None, pick from the included models.

Editor Preview
Local previews the avatar’s wearer perspective. Remote previews the quantized, smoothed pose other players see.

Menu Language
Language baked into expression menu labels when you build/upload the avatar. Follow Editor (default) uses the NDMF editor language. You can pin any of the five Unity Editor languages (English, 日本語, 한국어, 简体中文, 繁體中文) so menus can differ from the Inspector language.

Development Settings

Identifier
Slot name used in VRChat and by the app. Adding a Tracker fills this with a unique invented word; pick a SteamVR device, or enter a name manually (for example a serial). Selecting None as default hardware generates a new random Identifier. This Game Object name and this field is your slot name.

In-game

Connected

Object Tracking → Connected lights while the Object Tracking app is running and talking to VRChat. It turns off within a few seconds if the app is not connected. Tracked objects stay hidden until it lights up.

Tracker slots

Each Tracker’s Identifier on the avatar is a slot. The host maps your physical SteamVR devices onto those slots.

If a device’s serial equals the slot name, it is assigned automatically.
Remaining slots are filled with the other available trackers.
Assignment and offsets are saved by the app per avatar and restored when you wear that avatar again.

Open Object Tracking → Tracker Config in the expression menu.

Next Tracker cycles which physical device is assigned to the selected slot.
Nudge position and rotation on X / Y / Z. Axis colors match Unity (X red, Y green, Z blue).
Primary buttons use fixed human-scale steps:
- Metric position: ±0.5 / 5 / 30 cm
- Imperial position: ±1/4 / 2 / 12 in
- Rotation: ±2 / 15 / 90 °

Offset guide visuals

With Offset Guide Visuals enabled:

Opening a slot’s Tracker Config shows the translation/rotation guide on that object
Opening one axis shows only that axis
Guides are local-only (you see them; others do not)

Scale and height

Tracked props must match your real-world size in VRChat. The Tracker inspector Player Height field is this editor user’s current VRChat Real Height (read-only).

If scale looks wrong

Props too big or too small vs your body — check Real Height in VRChat and Tracker Scale on the prop

World anchors

World Anchor Transport is shared by all Trackers on the avatar. Direct is the default and uses 105 synced bits for the full anchor. Choose this, if you use a parameter compressor. Multiplex uses 13 bits and takes about 3.5 seconds per cycle. Choose this, if you need the smaller parameter budget and you are not using a parameter compressor.
